Recently I have been working on a series of monochromatic paintings inspired by black and white photographs from my childhood. While digging through archives of these photos I realized I could use this series as a way of looking back at my past, enjoying the memories, and coming to terms with my family relationships. The process of creating these paintings, has allowed me to explore beyond the static fixed reality of the photo, giving me the sense of having participated in the making of that moment, rather than having been captured by the camera. It has given me perspective into my past and perhaps a better understanding of self.
My hope is that these paintings evoke a sense of ones own family history, and the role that we each play in the making of these histories.
